  • This week, the industry experienced 6 ETF launches and 0 closures, shifting the 1-year Open-to-Close ratio to 2.11 and total US ETFs to 3,139.
  • March was a steady month after a volatile start to the year and April was similar with a few notable changes (data comparing 4/2/2023 to 4/30/2023):
    • Total assets increased 1.15%, there was an increase of 0 ETFs to total US ETF count (3,139), and 7 additional issuers by brand.
    • From our 11 asset class categories, Options increased the most (9.1%) with Volatility next (4.8%). Currency had the worst performance (-4.2%) with Commodities Derivative not far behind (-3.1%). The two largest asset classes of Equity (76.0% of assets) and Fixed Income (19.4%) were similar at 1.5% and 1.6% respectively.
    • The ETF expense ratio annual revenue stayed firm at $11.7 Bn.
  • In the past 16 months, the second lowest change of total ETFs for each month has been +8, in August of 2022. This past month was the lowest with no change. Oddly, there was an increase of 7 new issuers during the same time period. Besides October and November of 2022, March and April 2023 is the only consecutive positive increase in month-to-month assets in the past 16 months.
  • The tracked indexes had differing experiences in April. The Toroso ETF Industry Index was up 0.4% while the S&P Financial Select Sector Index led at 3.2%.
